Smasher and the Will o' the Thiccs is a free wacky action video game wherein you have to girth up to save lives. Developed by CreatureUnknown, this 2D indie furry game is a silly top-down golf game that lets you destroy your obstacles to achieve victory.

Using golf gameplay mechanics, you have to absorb the dastardly little floating flames on the map and save the trapped victim while using as few moves as possible—although there’s no harm in exceeding the strokes. This game was first made for the Weight Gaming 2020 Gain Jam and eventually expanded into a full version.

A different kind of golf

In Smasher and the Will o' the Thiccs, you play as Dakota “Smasher” Johnson, a shy badger who dreams of girthing up. This dream miraculously becomes real when the insidious “Will o' the Thiccs” suddenly descended upon his city one day—immediately bloating anyone who came in contact with them. With his friend Harley, he begins saving others by collecting all wisps and deflating anyone unfortunate enough to touch them.

The game pretty much employs basic golfing mechanics. You have to left-click on Smasher and drag to a direction in order to slingshot him to where the line points at. There’s a gauge at the bottom indicating the strength of your launch to aid you. What’s annoying, however, is that you need to wait for the “Next Round” to take another shot—and dragging around will pan the camera needlessly.

There’s no detailed in-game tutorial so things can get confusing, too. There are 9 levels in the main story campaign and finishing it will unlock the challenging Blueberry Mode. The money you earn can then be used to complete the whopping collection of 200 unique player skins. Aside from these, you can attempt to complete goals for each level such as reaching certain point thresholds and finding hidden rooms.

Needs some more tweaking

All in all, Smasher and the Will o' the Thiccs is an interesting little game if you’re a fan of cool furry designs. While there’s no tutorial to ease you in on the intricacies of the gameplay and the gameplay itself can feel clunky, this game is actually a challenging one for golf game lovers. There are numerous collectibles to get and goals to achieve, too.
